Promoting multilingualism in schools: building inclusive and culturally rich learning environments

Multilingualism—the use of more than one language by an individual or within a community—is not only a strength but also a powerful tool for fostering inclusion, cultural appreciation, and academic success.

This webinar explores how schools can embrace and promote multilingualism across all areas of school life, even if staff members are not multilingual themselves. It is ideal for teachers, pastoral leaders, boarding staff, and school leadership who are committed to creating diverse, inclusive school cultures that recognise and celebrate students’ linguistic identities.

Training topics will include:

  • Embracing multilingualism
    • Benefits of a multilingual environment
    • Supporting multilingual students academically and socially
    • Fostering belonging and inclusion through language recognition
  • Promoting multilingualism in the classroom
    • Practical strategies and activities to encourage language sharing
    • Tools to support learning regardless of staff language fluency
  • Creating a whole-school multilingual culture
    • Celebrating linguistic diversity through events, displays, and signage
    • Integrating language appreciation into school and boarding life
    • Encouraging collaboration between staff, students, and families.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the session, participants will:

  • Understand the impact of multilingualism on student learning, identity, and integration
  • Gain practical tools for promoting multilingualism in classroom settings
