The role of EAL Coordinator in mainstream education

Wednesday December 3, 12:30 – 13:30

Cost:  £55-110, member additional attendee £25, BSA member £75
Location: Online (Watch live or on catch up)

Course Outline:

Provision for EAL (English as an Additional Language) learners varies widely across schools. While some learners benefit from tailored support, much of their progress depends on how effectively mainstream classroom practice, pastoral care, and specialist provision work together.

At first glance, the EAL Coordinator’s role may appear limited to managing specialist interventions. In reality, this role is central to building whole-school understanding, cohesion, and inclusion—ensuring EAL learners are supported academically and pastorally.

This webinar will define the role of an effective EAL Coordinator and explore best practice strategies for supporting both staff and students. It will provide guidance on leadership, collaboration, data use, and cultural awareness.

Training Topics Will Include:

  • Defining the EAL Coordinator role: responsibilities, expectations, and leadership across the school
  • Building whole-school capacity: staff training, collaboration, and sharing of best practice
  • Using data effectively: tracking student progress, setting realistic targets, and informing intervention
  • Understanding and addressing the pastoral needs of EAL learners
  • Celebrating linguistic and cultural diversity within the school community.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the session, participants will:

  • Understand how to work collaboratively across departments to develop inclusive teaching practices and appropriate resources
  • Learn how to interpret and use data to inform decision-making and monitor the progress of EAL learners
  • Be equipped to promote greater awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity among staff and students
  • Gain confidence in developing a strategic and impactful EAL provision that supports both academic achievement and student wellbeing.
