Developing your school’s EAL policy: A practical guide

Maintaining a current and effective EAL (English as an Additional Language) policy is a statutory responsibility for most schools and a vital part of delivering high-quality, inclusive education. A strong EAL policy defines your school’s values, provision, and approach—internally for staff, and externally for students, parents, and wider stakeholders.

This webinar provides practical guidance on how to write, update, and implement a robust EAL policy. It will support schools in aligning their policy with current best practice, ensuring meaningful delivery, and reviewing impact year on year.

Training topics will include:

  • Key components of an effective and inclusive EAL policy
  • Establishing a clear review and update cycle
  • Aligning policy with national guidance and evolving best practice
  • Embedding your EAL policy across teaching, assessment, and pastoral care
  • Engaging staff, students, and families in the policy’s implementation.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the session, participants will:

  • Understand how to develop and maintain an EAL policy review process that supports improvement and accountability
  • Stay informed on current trends and expectations in EAL delivery and how they impact policy content
  • Gain practical strategies to ensure your EAL policy is consistently applied across all areas of school life
  • Feel confident in articulating the purpose and value of your school’s EAL approach to internal and external audiences.
