Wednesday May 20, 10:30 – 12:30
Cost: £135-270
Audience: Pastoral/boarding staff and leaders, Deputy Head Pastoral, International Student Coordinator, SLT/SMT, Health/Medical Centre lead
Location: Online
Course Outline:
Even for the most agile, flexible and accommodating schools, there are occasions where a school may need to consider whether a student is ‘fit to board’. Across the boarding sector, schools are identifying a need to have a policy to this process.
For schools with international boarders, this rationale, evidence and risk assessment process can come with heightened sensitivity, notably around language and cultural communication differences and the logistics of working with parents or dedicated agents/guardians in different time zones.
This two-hour interactive session will help delegates engage with their existing process to assess fitness to board and whether adjustments need to be made, and publicised, to accommodate international families.
Training topics will include:
- Why might you assess fitness to board?
- Working with parents
- Balancing the needs of the student and the boarding community
- Legal considerations and continuity of education
- Policy and process reflection.
Learning outcomes:
- Improved understanding of why some students are not fit to board
- Recommended strategies to engaging positively with international families and stakeholders
- Reflection and discussion time around your own policies, processes and experiences in this area and opportunity to discuss with other participants.
