Oxford University has been ranked the best in the world for the 10th consecutive year in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026. It topped a list of over 2,000 institutions worldwide, based on metrics such as teaching, research, international outlook, and industry links. Cambridge and Imperial College London also placed in the top 10, with Cambridge rising to joint third. In total, 11 UK universities made the global top 100, though the UK saw fewer than 50 institutions in the top 500 for the first time since 2016. While UK universities improved in teaching reputation and research excellence, concerns were raised over worsening student-staff ratios and funding challenges. London School of Economics (LSE) and Warwick recorded their worst performances, though LSE remained top in a separate national ranking. Meanwhile, China, Singapore, and Japan continued to rise in prominence. Oxford’s Vice-Chancellor highlighted the need for renewed investment to maintain global competitiveness amid increasing sector pressures.
