Source: (19) Enhancing Cross-Cultural Adjustment for International Students in South Korea: Insights from Research and Personal Experience | LinkedIn

Adjusting to a new culture can be incredibly stressful for international students, often leading to issues such as stress, anxiety, isolation, and depression.

My research focused on how proactive personality influences cross-cultural adjustment, with cultural intelligence (CQ) serving as a mediating factor. I surveyed 167 international students in South Korea and discovered that both proactive personality and CQ are crucial for successful cultural adaptation. Importantly, CQ fully mediates the relationship between proactive personality and cross-cultural adjustment.

After a year of dedicated work, I graduated in August last year. Having experienced life as an international student in South Korea myself, I am keenly aware of the challenges students face, including:

  • Language Barriers: Difficulties in effective communication can hinder academic performance and social interactions.
  • Cultural Differences: Navigating unfamiliar customs and social norms can lead to feelings of isolation and frustration.
  • Academic Pressure: High academic expectations and differing educational systems can increase stress and anxiety.
  • Social Integration: Building meaningful relationships and finding a supportive community can be challenging.

These issues can significantly impact mental health and overall academic success. My thesis highlights the need for cultural intelligence training and robust support services to facilitate the adjustment of international students. Establishing strong support systems, such as government initiatives and counseling centers, is essential for creating a supportive educational environment in South Korea. Addressing mental health issues and promoting social integration are vital for the well-being and success of international students.

I am deeply interested in improving the experiences of international students, leveraging my research and personal experiences to make a meaningful impact. If you have insights or experiences related to this matter, I would love to hear your thoughts and engage in a discussion.
